HISTORY OF THE SOUTHERN COLORADO HUNTING RETRIEVER CLUB

The Southern Colorado Hunting Retriever Club was founded in 1985 in Pueblo, Colorado by four retriever owners looking to bring retriever owners and hunters together to train retrievers and compete in Hunt Tests in the newly formed Hunting Retriever Club INC. organization. Dom Cingoranelli, John Rulapaugh, Walt Peterson and Gary Vertrees had the same vision as national founder Omar Driskoll to establish clubs across the country to promote hunting retrievers, run realistic hunt tests and to better the hunting retriever breed. Omar Driskoll, in partnership with the United Kennel Club had officially formed the HRC organization in 1984. Southern Colorado HRC was one of the early clubs to join the new organization. SCHRC had their first hunt test in March of 1986 at Lake Pueblo State Wildlife Area with Omar Driskoll attending as a finished judge.

SCHRC members were an important part of the early days of the organization. Don Ley co-wrote the running rules for Upland Hunt Tests. Don served as the National Vice President. John Klomp also served as a national officer and on the Grand Hunt Committee for several years. Pete Spangler served as National Secretary. Don Ley, John Klomp, and Tim Boies all served as Region 13 Field Representatives. SCHRC judges that have judges at the Grand include: Don Ley, John Klomp, Tim Boies, Lee Markowski, Jim Partin, Dom Cingoranelli, Jim Davis, and Duane Biggerstaff. Several club judges have been judging or judged for 30 years or more: Don Ley, John Klomp, Tiom Boies, Erik Brekke and Lee Markowski.

The International Grand was held in Colorado three times in the early years of HRC. In 1989 it was held at the Mt. Blanca Game Bird and Trout facility in the San Luis Valley. The event was hosted by SCHRC with 38 dogs entered. Jim Partin was a judge at that event. In 1994 the Grand was held in Rifle, Colorado hosted, hosted by Platte Valley HRC with just over 100 dogs entered. John Klomp was a judge and 7 club members entered dogs including Brent Cozzolino, Erik Brekke, Don Ley, Jeremy Ley, Dave Winters, Tim Boies and Grant Hurley. The third grand was hosted a few years later by Platte Valley HRC at what is now Andrick Ponds SWA near Brush, Colorado. SCHRC has been a strong club for many years and dozen of dedicated and hardworking members have served as club officers. The entire club comes together each year to put on a yearly hunt test which is well attended by dogs and handlers from several states.
